Sylvania NB530SLX Blu-ray Disc Player Review
Good Basic value, December 10, 2009 By Alan L. Pierce
This is my first experience with Blu-Ray. I wasn't looking for BD live or any internet service options, so this basic unit fit the bill.It was also recommended by Consumer Reports. So far, so good. I have only viewed a few movies so far, but the machine functions flawlessly. Plays standard DVD's with improved picture quality.Load time averages about 30-45 seconds (just enough time to get a beer out of the fridge!) I have an older HDTV with DVI input, so I ordered an HDMI to DVI cable, and it works well, except that audio has to be routed seperately, resulting in loss of true surround capability. This won't be a problem on newer HDTV's with HDMI inputs. anyone interested in a basic Blu-Ray player should consider this model.
Great Budget Blu-ray Player, December 2, 2009 By E. J Tastad "ejt" (Marion, IA United States)
Pros:
Value
Ease of Use
Image from a BD is noticeably better on my 32" 1080i TV than the same movie on DVD upconverted to 1080i.
Cons:
DVD Upconversion is a little blocky at 1080i (relative to Pioneer DV-410V which is very good)
Features - fairly basic
Bottom Line: Perfect value Blu-ray player. It gets the job done.
Comments: The THX test for a DVD shows 7 levels of black and not the full 10. I don't have a THX BD to test. Everything is easy to use and I didn't need to change any settings out of the box except for muting the HDMI audio since I use the digital out into my amplifier.
Great entry level player for those on a budget, December 1, 2009 By K. Tinsley (San Jose, CA)
I made the choice for this player since it was cheap and I wanted to a bluray player to supplement my Xbox 360. The Sylvania gets the job done. I may not get Bluray LIVE, but I have yet to find the technology developed enough to make it worth my while to invest in. The picture quality is great for the price and lets be honest-- if you're considering this player you probably have an equally entry-level type HDTV as well.
Get this if you're an HD enthusiast on a budget OR a disgruntled 360 owner. Bare bones Bluray at its best!
